I got a really cool idea for a game and wanted to use the Source 2 engine, I was looking for how to get access to this engine and couldn't find it.

There's a simpler explanation. Source 1 is old, Source 2 isn't available for third parties.

Source 2 isn't openly available yet because it's still in development. They only just replaced Havok with their own internal physics engine in it.

There's Source 2 now, which both CS2 and Half Life Alyx use. No idea how accessible it is though, but it does exist.

Not likely. Originally when Source 2 was announced Valve got out there and said Source 2 will be free for anyone to use as long as they distribute via Steam.

To my knowledge only Valve and Facepunch are currently using the engine. And Facepunch has a long standing relationship with Valve.

It will introduce some bugs initially, but also allow better graphics and better performance on newer hardware.
